Re: Bizzarro Indie Contractor Experience

Yes as an Independent Contractor you should be in charge of setting your own schedule. But even as an employee, I get 45 minutes before I have to be hands on client and I live 5 minutes from the spa. So even if the client walks in the door to schedule the appointment, they still have to allow me 45 ...

Re: Aloha from Maui

paradise_massage, Aloha, welcome to BWOL! Mahalo for stopping by to introduce yourself! I hope you come to like it here! As you may notice from my avatar, I'm a fan of Honu (snapped that photo @ Maui Aquarium in 2011)... we were there not long after the tsunami. I picked up a few phrases including t...

Re: Personal Training and Massage Therapy

I know 2 people who are Licensed Athletic Trainers / massage therapists in my state, and they do very well. But that is probably a whole different set of educational requirements than for a personal trainer. The female has a private practice and the male works in a hospital. Sorry I am not much help...

Re: question about deep tissue

The body's natural defenses will always be better at keeping you out, than any technique you can do to force your way in. If you can get your head around that concept, it will help you to visualize what "deep tissue" ought to be. It must always be a collaboration, with your hands saying "please, ma...

Re: question about deep tissue

I'm with MarionFM... I prefer to do some MFR to open up the tissues. I feel you have to educate clients, because where I work we see a lot of tourists. (And yes, they actually want me to be able to do 5 or even 6 hours of massage in a day... and yes that can be ALL deep tissue work, but it depends o...

Re: Hello from London.

Rosie, I went to massage therapy school at the age of 32. On August 25th, I celebrated 19 years since graduation from MT school. Definitely investigate it, contact several professional massage therapists with different approaches to the work. When I was in MT school I thought that I'd be in private ...

Holley, Kyra's in Minneapolis now. My friend that met you a few years back when she went to the big island... you tried to get together for a trade but ended up accidentally running into each other just before she left to come home to Wisconsin ... at a museum? She is not a member of this board, but...

Aloha aloha_student, Thanks for your reply.... yeah love my little Honu photo. He was such a cute little guy. LOL I photographed him in 2011 at the Maui Ocean Center. I was on Maui for some continuing education at the time. I have family that have lived on Maui since 2005. I have some FB friends on ...

Re: How to work on men who are ultra-sensitive about body ha

Back when I was doing mostly private practice I went with an Oil Gel (Lotus Touch). But for the last almost 9 years I've been an employee in a spa where we use Coconut Oil. I did have one client many years back who said it felt like he was being exfoliated with his own body hair... well when I heard...

I agree with Marion there are just too many variables. And to make sure everything is fair... I really do think it's best if you set it all down in writing and have a lawyer advise you on it.

Re: Intense reaction to me after working on someone??

I haven't had anything near that intense... but have definitely had a client or two that made me feel like I needed to shower to get their energy off me. Particularly if they are smokers, that's hard on me, because I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. And there was this one guy the spa made me work on a...

Re: Where do you put your brouchures?

I used to put mine in a chiropractor's office & a health food store, hair salons... though I'd say the best place to put brochures is your own office. Brochures can be an excellent educational material but you're most likely the best one to use them to promote your business. Very few brochure design...

Re: Questions for Massage School?

I don't recall being exceptionally sore in Massage School either. Of course that was 19 years ago, but we were also getting quite a bit of massage at the time too... so that would have cut down on any physical pain I'd think. When I was in massage school they suggested we should be able to do 4 one ...

Re: TouchPro Certification

How about tying it in as some kind of community service? Fire station, police force, volunteers at the Humane Society...is there a cause you'd like to support? That might be a great way to "donate" your time & efforts to people who would really appreciate your work.
