What are your best Search Engine / Optimization Strategies?

Postby emmanick on Sun Aug 28, 2011 4:54 am

I am working on my site to help get me higher in search engine rankings. There are so many therapists where I live and, as a single practitioner, top placement is key to my success.

What tactics (besides quality content, of course) do you use to increase your rankings?

Use Google's keyword tool @ https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeting/Explorer?__u=1000000000&__c=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS#search.none to find local keywords that people are using to find massage therapists in your area. Examples include massage wichita or massage therapist in wichita ks, etc. If you have a blog on your website, write a post and incorporate those keywords into the title, the permalink of the post and within the post. Otherwise, use those keywords in the title of your website's homepage as well as the content on the home page.

See where that lands you in the search engines for the keywords you targeted. A good way to check your rankings in Google is to go to http://www.scroogle.org and use the scroogle scraper. That gives you a better indication than using google because google will take your personal search history into account when showing you websites in search results.

Once you've gotten your keywords and know where you rank for them, find some blogs to write quality guest posts for on massage related topics that you're familiar with. The older and most established the website, the better. Look for websites with a PR of 3 or higher. You can check this by installing the google toolbar into your browser. This is not crucial, as any links will help, but the stronger the site that is linking to you, the more it will help. One massage related blog that posts guest articles that I know of is http://abcsofmassagetherapy.com/.

Most website and blogs allow guest posters to put links back to their websites in the post. Use your keywords that you are trying to rank for as anchor text for the links back to your website. Continue until you're ranking on the first page for the terms you chose. It's best to change up the anchor text though because you can be penalized by google for using the exact same keyword anchor for every link back to your site.

Hope that helps a little.
