How to Be A Poet

By Wendell Berry (1934 - ) (To remind myself) i Make a place to sit down. Sit down. Be quiet. You must depend upon affection, reading, knowledge, skill -- more of each than you have -- inspiration, work, growing older, patience, for patience joins time to eternity. Any readers who like your poems, d...

This moment

"Now I understand that there are two melodies playing, one below the other, one easier to hear, the other lower, steady, perhaps more faithful for being less heard yet always present. When all other things seem lively and real, this one fades. Yet the notes of it touch as gently as fingertips, as th...

May have escaped weapons lab

"It's a suspicion that the coronavirus may have escaped, accidentally or otherwise, from a laboratory in the central Chinese city of Wuhan where the virus was first recorded. Its supporters point to the presence of a major biological research facility in the city. The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WI...

The Land of beginning Again

"I wish that there were some wonderful place In the Land of Beginning Again. Where all our mistakes and all our heartaches And all of our poor selfish grief Could be dropped like a shabby old coat at the door and never put on again. I wish we could come on it all unaware, Like the hunter who finds a...

Sour Grapes?

Sex is perhaps the best example of being in the Flow, except when it isn't.
There seems to be a natural period before puberty that was somewhat idyllic. Is there a similar period after that procreation urge has passed? Are we socially conditioned to be unaware of/deny/delay this transition/liberation?

A Baby Bust

By Amanda Little MAY 11, 2021 — 5:30PM The 2020 census reported the lowest rate of population growth in the U.S. since the post-Depression decade, inspiring a chorus of economic Cassandras who want to reverse this trend. To shore up economic growth, they argue, we need to "raise fertility" and "avoi...

Be stirred

by Stephen Dunn And so you call your best friend who’s away, just to hear his voice, but forget his recording concludes with “Have a nice day.” “Thank you, but I have other plans,” you’re always tempted to respond, as an old lady once did, the clerk in the liquor store unable to laugh. Always tempte...

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had every...

ode to a butterfly

“For a creature with stained glass windows for wings, she’s wonderfully light on her feet, prancing from blossom to blossom in toe shoes, rehearsing, we’re told, for a debut appearance in Mexico. Re: Poetry and Massage

“Once upon a time, when women were birds,
there was the simple understanding that
to sing at dawn and to sing at dusk
was to heal the world through joy.
The birds still remember
what we have forgotten,
that the world is meant to be
celebrated.”

Coming tornado

The United States is entering a new phase of the pandemic. Although we’ve previously described the most devastating periods as “waves” and “surges,” the more proper metaphor now is a tornado: Some communities won’t see the storm, others will be well fortified against disaster, and the most at-risk p...

Affluenza

This rising obsession with getting and spending has prodded authors John de Graaf, David Wann, and Thomas H. Naylor to observe that "a powerful virus has infected American society, threatening our wallets, our friendships, our families, our communities, and our environment. We call the virus ‘afflue...
